Chapter Eleven

When working with a new client to aid them in finding a life partner, I listen with my entire body—all my senses must be alert to my client. All my wits, my skills. What they don’t tell me is often more important than what they do. The silences speak. The silences are where the answers truly lie.

“You can’t have silences on a podcast,” Sparkle interrupted Rani’s guest, Mrs. Bukar. “I mean you can because we can edit them out,” Sparkle told Mrs. Bukar while Rani rested her chin on her knees and said nothing. She’d just had the flash of an idea for a second book topic, but it had been like a firefly—a glimpse of light and then dark, and she reached for her phone to make a note of what Mrs. Bukar had said that had sparked the idea.

“Just saying.” Sparkle was matter-of-fact, as always.

The look Mrs. Bukar—who at seven in the morning was already in full make up, hair and an emerald-green Indian suit—returned was queen to peasant, but Sparkle, holding her work-issued iPhone 13 held her own.

“I mean I know you’re famous and all,” Sparkle added.

Sparkle too had full makeup, but it was much subtler today—more glow with a hint of sparkle near the corners of her outer eyes feathering to her temple than her usual disco ball. Rani’s cousin Meena had met Sparkle at Diwali and instead of being professionally horrified, she’d been intrigued and had worked on a few prototype MegD skincare and makeup products—geared for women of color—and had brought them to the wedding for Sparkle to test. Meena and Sparkle had disappeared last night for a tutorial and a test run.

“I would say I’m more revered and respected.” Mrs. Bukar adjusted her scarf, her posture erect as ever, even though Sparkle had stopped filming.

Or maybe she hadn’t. Sparkle caught things on audio and camera that surprised Rani, even when she thought she was paying attention. She couldn’t imagine Mrs. Bukar ever having an embarrassing outburst or misspeaking, or interrupting someone because an idea had popped in her head. Rani had been sitting on her hands while Mrs. Bukar discussed her first client meeting process.

“How about feared?” Rani asked curiously.

“Feared?” Mrs. Bukar’s thinly threaded brows raised in surprise. “Why should I be feared? People hire me. Their parents pay a lot of money for my expertise and extensive connections.”

“You are uncanny in your ability to drill in people’s heads,” Rani said. “That can be intimidating. Ro was super freaked when you read his palm.”

“Your cousin, Rohan, had much to hide and a large audience he was still trying to impress.”

“Nailed it,” Rani breathed. “And this without formal psychological training. Maybe I wasted so much time and money in school.”

“Education is never wasted if one chooses to use it, nor is it solely found in a lecture hall or textbook.”

“Told y’all.” Sparkle smirked. Gemma looked at the lights and the recording equipment and tapped her lips. Sparkle just grinned. Both Rani and Gemma
